The Hornby 2721 Pannier Tank 0-6-0 in OO Gauge is a half-cab design that has been in their catalogue since the early 1980s. The overall appearance of this Hornby stalwart is very reasonable since its much needed makeover in 2001, with early versions being much less detailed to say the least.
The chassis of the Hornby 2721 Pannier Tank now has blackened wheels and rods for added realism. It’s also lost its traction tyres too since the makeover, giving much smoother, more reliable performance over uneven pointwork and track.
Key Features Of The Hornby 2721 Pannier Tank
Detailed features such as the blackened buffers and other iron work on this diminutive locomotive add greatly to its realism. Cab back head detail is very good indeed plus the separate coal moulding is an added bonus too. Raised number plates add to its overall appearance, but compared to the Bachmann versions of the Pannier Tanks the Hornby version is still very basic. The other downside are the lack of DCC socket and no NEM pockets either.
Livery wise, you have a choice of various Great Western Railway (GWR) liveries if you’re shopping for second hand models. All liveries have been produced to Hornby’s usual high standard, and the base GWR green paintwork has a very nice satin sheen to it.
Is It Worth The Money?
Although it’s a fairly basic train set standard locomotive, the much improved quality since the 2001 makeover makes it good value for money, especially on the second hand market.
